Lamp Design

African Acacia Tree Inspired
Project Overview
This 2 week exploration focused on designing a diffused or indirect lighting element. Other requirements were to accommodate for a large power source within the body of the design and provide proof of concept by prototyping using LEDs.
The Design
Form inspired by the African native Umbrella Thorn Acacia, this lamp uses reflected light and clever hinging to function as both a traditional task light and as an ambient light source. The design features a single hinge point, 2 magnetic points and a simple pressure sensitive power button.

Ideation

My idea was to develop a dynamic product. These ideation sketches focus on finding solutions to the challenges associated with creating movement.

Orientations

There are 3 main body components to the Acacia Lamp. These include the base which houses the power supply, and functions as a touch sensitive off/on switch. The main vertical body is a hollow shell which houses the LEDs and acts as a light tunnel. The third component is the lamp shade which redirects the light coming from the light tunnel.

When the user intends to change to the ambient orientation of the lamp, he/she would only need to push down on the protruding piece until it is flush with the body and the magnet snaps it into place. While the lamp shade was inspired in form by the Acacia Tree, each end of the shade was designed for its specific function. The ambient side is more angled to create better reflection and thus create an ambient glow. The task side is longer and more delicately angled to better direct the light to a specific location.
